It Starts With the Food…
Ben and I often get emails from customers asking which wines we recommend. Of course, we have our favourites. But our first response is almost always the same: what kinds of wine do you enjoy? And, just as importantly, what are you drinking it with?
I love opening a bottle just because it’s a Tuesday, or enjoying one in the sun — when there is sun — or, lately, in front of the fire with Netflix. But most of the time, wine is at its best with food. That’s usually how I decide what I’m going to drink. So this Easter, let’s start with what’s on your table and work out what pairs best.
Good Friday: White Fish & Riesling
For me, Easter begins on Good Friday with a white fish dish. And nothing goes better with fish than a crisp Riesling.
I’ll personally be opening a bottle of the 2023 AFW Wilberforce Riesling (£19) — and if you’re feeling decadent, pairing it with oysters to start. Its bright acidity cuts through beautifully and makes a wonderful beginning to the long weekend.
Easter Sunday: Spring Lamb & Pinot Noir
For many people, Easter Sunday is the main event. For me, it has to be spring leg of lamb. And in my view, nothing pairs better than Pinot Noir.
The 2018 Moorilla Muse Pinot Noir (£37) is an excellent choice and a perfect way to elevate the meal. If you prefer your Pinot slightly lighter — more in the style of New Zealand — then try the 2023 Praxis Pinot Noir (£27). Its fruit‑forward style has real appeal and is building a loyal following down under.
Pork or Ham: Grenache for Sweetness & Depth
If pork or ham is taking centre stage, I’d go for something a little sweeter and more robust. The Common Molly McLaren Vale Grenache (£27) was made for the job. It’s a beautiful wine with generous plum notes that pair wonderfully with the meat. Better still, it will carry you neatly through to dessert, with fruit that complements the raisins tucked into your hot cross buns.
