Adelaide Hills, South Australia
Hesketh Wines was founded in 2006 by Trish and Jonathan Hesketh in South Australia, built on a conviction that great wine should taste like where it's from, not where it's been processed. They source fruit from specific, named sites - which is rarer than it sounds in a region dominated by large co-ops and blending operations.
Their Small Batch Adelaide Hills Chardonnay is the wine that first caught our attention. Grapes come from two contrasting districts within the Hills: the high-altitude chill of Piccadilly Valley, and the slightly warmer slopes of Paracombe. Together they produce a wine with genuine complexity - partial French oak adds creaminess and a subtle nuttiness, while the cool-climate acidity keeps everything focused and fresh. It's approachable enough to drink now, structured enough to reward patience. If you think you've made up your mind about Australian Chardonnay, Hesketh will make you reconsider.
