The Clare valley is riesling country. The wine produced in "The Clare" has become synonymous with the perfect expression of bone-dry, lightly floral, thirst quenching riesling which Australia is now simply the best producer of. But there is so much more to the region with some incredibly famous names making some of Australia's (and the world's) best wines from stunning (and hugely priced) Shiraz, along with a coterie of vineyards now producing excellent new "old world" wines like Sangiovese, Fiano & Vermentino.
There are Clare Valley Rieslings that win awards. And then there are Penna Lane Rieslings — which win all of them.
Peter Treloar’s connection to this land goes back to 1865, when his ancestor Francis acquired the first vines in what would become Watervale. Peter’s own vineyards, purchased in 2009, sit in the Skilly Valley — a quiet, elevated subregion tucked between Sevenhill and Watervale — where dry conditions and ancient soils create the perfect environment for Clare Valley Riesling of exceptional precision. The results are difficult to argue with: the Epstein Trophy for Best Current Vintage Riesling, Best Riesling of Show, Best Single Vineyard Wine. The 2022 Skilly Valley Riesling ranked #20 in James Suckling’s Top 100 Australian wines.
Penna Lane Wines is a small vineyard that consistently produces high quality wine. The vines hug the hillsides of the beautiful Skilly Valley which is a subregion of the Clare Valley and runs between the townships of Sevenhill and Watervale. It is home to a small number of premium wineries and produces wines that are considered some of the best in the Clare Valley.
Recently, their 2022 Watervale Riesling was awarded the Jim Barry Trophy for Best Wine of Show, as well as the Mick Knappstein Trophy for the Best Current Vintage Riesling, Best Riesling of Show and Best Single Vineyard Wine.
That ageing potential is one of the strongest arguments for buying Penna Lane by the case rather than the bottle. These wines reward patience — and they reward cellaring at a price that makes doing so entirely practical. One of the most genuinely exciting things we stock, and one we return to again and again.
Bone-dry, alive with citrus and slate, with the structure to age for a decade and the freshness to make it irresistible tonight. If you care at all about Riesling — and after you’ve tried this, you will — Penna Lane is essential. We are genuinely delighted to be selling Pete’s wines.
