Mosquito Hill Wines is a small, artisanal winery located in the picturesque Mt Jagged region of the Fleurieu Peninsula. The Fleurieu peninsula is often better known for its beaches, and I couldn't help but put a picture of my favourite one below, Carrickalinga. But the stunning beaches are matched by the fabulous wines and we were thrilled to meet Glyn & Dan who are producing some of the most fabulous hidden gems we've come across. Vintage Blanc de Blancs, aged Gevery like Pinots noirs and dreamy Puiligny-like Chardonnays... sometimes you just get really, really lucky given that's what we wanted but really didn't expect to find.
Founded in 1994 by surgeon Glyn Jamieson and his late wife Elizabeth — who fell in love with Burgundy and Champagne during a study trip to France and came home determined to recreate something similar — Mosquito Hill occupies a 200-acre site in the cool, sea-influenced hills around Mt Jagged. Now in his eighties, Glyn is still making wine. In 2022, winemaker Dan Franklin joined and brought a wealth of cool-climate experience with him. Together they make Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and vintage Blanc de Blancs that taste as though they belong in Gevrey or Puligny.
The Southern Fleurieu is one of Australia’s most underappreciated cool-climate wine zones. Exposed to the cooling maritime influence of Encounter Bay and the Southern Ocean, and elevated enough to produce genuinely long, cool growing seasons, it provides exactly the conditions that Pinot Noir and Chardonnay demand. Most Australian producers don’t come near it. Mosquito Hill has been quietly making the most of it for over thirty years.
The Blanc de Blancs — made in the traditional Champagne method from Chardonnay grown on the estate — is a particular highlight: creamy, precise, and genuinely complex in a way that puts many far more expensive bottles to shame. The Pinot Noir tells a similar story: cool-climate elegance, real Burgundian character, and a price that makes it one of the best-value serious Pinots available in the UK.
These are not “Australian-style” wines in any conventional sense. The fruit is cool, the winemaking restrained, the results extraordinary. When we found them, we genuinely couldn’t believe what we were tasting — and we’re not usually given to hyperbole. One of the most exciting hidden gems in the country, and one of our proudest finds.
