In 2024, Ed Carr became the first Australian — and only the second person outside of Champagne — to be named the world’s best sparkling winemaker. For those of us who have been pouring House of Arras for years, it came as absolutely no surprise.
Founded in Tasmania in 1995, House of Arras was built on one conviction: that Australia’s cool southern island could produce traditional method sparkling wine to rival the world’s finest. The name means ‘rich tapestry’ — and that is precisely what Ed Carr has spent thirty years weaving. Using Tasmania’s extraordinary cool climate and long, slow growing seasons, he crafts sparkling wines of genuine complexity: creamy, mineral, layered, and arrestingly long. The A by Arras is the accessible introduction. The Grand Vintage is the head-turner. The premium cuvées are the reason judges run out of superlatives.
Tasmania’s cool southern climate is the foundation of everything. The long, slow growing seasons — significantly cooler than mainland Australia — allow the base wines to develop the fine acidity and delicate fruit character that traditional method sparkling wine demands. Ed Carr’s genius is in the blending and the patience: these wines spend years on lees before release, developing the depth and complexity that justify the comparisons to prestige Champagne.
The range has a clear logic. Start with the A by Arras if you’re new to the house — it’s approachable, beautifully made, and genuinely impressive at its price point. The Grand Vintage and the premium cuvées are for special occasions, or for anyone who has spent serious money on Champagne and wants to understand just how good Australian sparkling wine can be.
We are one of the very few stockists of House of Arras in the UK, and we consider it a genuine privilege. If you’ve been spending serious money on Champagne, these wines will make you stop and think very carefully about where you put it next.
